The American Board of General Practice has two pathways that lead to board certification. The Standard Primary Pathway is one of those pathways. The other pathway of the American Board of General Practice is the Previous Experience Pathway.
The American Board of General Practice ( ABGP ) is a certifying board which is accredited and recognized by the American Academy of General Physicians. The American Academy of General Physicians is a non-profit professional society of physicians.
When a physician has made the decision to pursue board certification by the American Board of General Practice, the first decision he/she should make is down which pathway he/she desires to proceed. That being either the Previous Experience Pathway of the American Board of General Practice or the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice.

A retrospective approach is utilized in evaluating and examining an applicant or examinee of the American Board of General Practice under the Previous Experience Pathway. Those physicians who challenge the American Board of General Practice by oral examination for immediate board certification utilize the Previous Experience Pathway of the American Board of General Practice.
An applicant, who is proceeding down the Previous Experience Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, is not precluded from simultaneously proceeding down the Standard Primary Pathway. Most applicants or examinees of the American Board of General Practice choose to proceed down both pathways at the same time. The reason for this is because some components of each pathway are utilized by both pathways. For example, under both the Standard Primary Pathway and the Previous Experience Pathway, an applicant must submit an application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway. Also, under both pathways, an application for Admission into the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine is required.
Under the Previous Experience Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, there are several applications involved. They are the Application to Challenge the American Board of General Practice by Oral Examination, which is unique to the Previous Experience Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, and the Application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, which is an application under the Standard Primary Pathway. Additionally, the applicant or examinee must submit, to the American College of General Medicine, an Application for Admission into the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine. (The American College of General Medicine is a different, separate and distinct organization from the American Board of General Practice.)
